So tomorrow marks a whopping year and a half since I last
relaxed my hair – yes it’s actually been eighteen months and I can’t believe
it. Looking back, it feels like only yesterday that I relaxed my hair for the
last time. Over the last eighteen months there have definitely been many challenges,
but there have also been many rewards too. Like with my six month no-relaxer
anniversary, I want to share eighteen tips I would go back and tell myself at the beginning of this journey, eighteen months ago – original I know ahhahaha.

- Deep conditioner, deep
conditioner, deep conditioner.
- Hot oil treatments are great. In fact
just a regular oil treatment will work wonders on your hair and scalp.
- Tea tree oil is your best friend,
especially when you have an itchy scalp.
- Sleeping in a hair wrap will save
your strands (and time in the mornings…).
- Drying your hair with an old tee
(or a microfiber towel) is much better for your hair.
- It is okay if you forget (or are
too lazy) to moisturise your hair every single day – though you will regret it.
- Being lazy doesn’t mean your hair
has to suffer.
- Wash day doesn’t have to last the
full day.
- It takes (WAY!!!) more effort but
finger combing hair is a great alternative that stops you from ripping your
hair out.
- You don’t have to shampoo your
hair with every wash.
- You can save time (and water) by
shampooing/conditioning your hair before wetting your hair.
- Sometimes your hair is in need of
moisture and sometimes it’s in need of protein. The real trick is knowing when it’s
in need of which.
- Experimenting with products and ingredients
helps you see what works and what doesn’t.
- Getting ample amounts of samples
also helps you see what works and what doesn’t.
- You will learn A LOT about you
and your hair (yes the two are actually mutually exclusive).
- Living with natural hair takes
time (and patience).
- Living with natural hair is a constant learning process and there is still loads that you don’t know and still need to
discover.
- Despite everything, I wouldn’t change
my hair for anything.

I can’t wait to see where the rest of this journey takes me.
