Glycolic Acid.

Did I mention that Acid Week is still on this week? No? Well it is. Since delving into the world of since (wow how many times have I started a sentence like that?) I’ve been so fascinated by acids and how these liquids can literally transform the skin of millions. This is why I really wanted to dedicate some time (two weeks now) to learn more about the stuff and to hopefully teach you how they work and why we should be using them. Last week I talked about retinol and mandelic acid, but today I’m taking it back to the beginning of my acid journey with glycolic acid.

When I first decided that I wanted to start using acids, my skin had been acting up BIG time. I was on holiday in Spain and my face was breaking out left, right and centre. I had remembered reading about an acid that could help reduce breakouts while simultaneously improving the appearance of dark spots. Upon my return home, I kept an eye out for the special acid knowing I would soon make my purchase. A few weeks later I wrote about the Nip + Fab acids I had bought and my first impressions.
So, what makes glycolic so great? Exactly the same reasons that made me want to try it in the first place. Look to any blogger, magazine or even chat with a friend, and I’m sure they’ll all wax lyrical about the many wonders of glycolic acid. As an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA), glycolic acid gently exfoliates the skin by removing top layers of dead skin and sloughing away at the oily bonds that contribute to spots, to the reveal bright clear skin. Glycolic also helps with discolouration (again by removing dead skin cells) as well as helping with fine lines and wrinkles.

While I’ve still got a few pads left before they finish (expect a review soon), I’m still considering whether or not I’ll make a second purchase. There is one thing however that I didn’t know about glycolic acid until last week. Even though it’s good for helping get rid of dark spots and hyperpigmentation, glycolic acid can also CAUSE some discolouration in black women. As this is something that is already a concern even when it comes to using certain sunscreens, this is definitely something to think about.

Stay tuned for more on glycolic acid in the next couple of weeks when I’ll be sharing my final review.
